Meccanoplastica’s ESG Journey

Meccanoplastica, a Florence-based leader in extrusion and blow molding systems, is strengthening its ESG commitment through concrete actions in environmental, social, and governance areas. Following a materiality analysis, new ethical standards, and the development of low-impact machinery, the company is now working toward publishing a sustainability report and obtaining high-level certifications such as ISO 14001 and an upgraded Ecovadis rating.

“Thanks to these initiatives, we are receiving concrete feedback from the market: we’re seeing that the decision to purchase a Meccanoplastica system is no longer based solely on its intrinsic quality and reliability, but also on the company’s commitment to and results in ESG criteria, as a tangible sign of a forward-looking approach.”
Alberto Mencherini, CSR Manager at Meccanoplastica – a Florence-based company specializing in extrusion, stretch-blow, and injection-blow molding systems – has no doubts about the sustainability path the company has undertaken and continues to pursue.

This journey began some time ago, starting with the first carbon footprint assessments carried out in 2022, and is now bearing significant fruit. As of mid-2025, Meccanoplastica is taking stock of its progress and outlining next steps.

ANALYSIS
The company first carried out a materiality analysis involving its stakeholders. A questionnaire was then sent to 36 selected suppliers for the materiality assessment, with strong participation (over 70% responded). Employees were also engaged through training sessions and the launch of a new welfare plan in collaboration with Intesa San Paolo.

An internal team was created to oversee and improve the company’s social, environmental, and governance practices, led by CSR Manager Alberto Mencherini. A new code of ethics has been drafted.

Finally, a Sustainability Plan was validated, setting the course for the company to publish a Sustainability Report within the next two years.

PRODUCT
On the product side, several Meccanoplastica machines are already certified under Euromap 10+ standards for energy efficiency. And more are on the way, thanks to innovations aimed at reducing the energy consumption of various systems.

All these efforts contributed to the company earning a Bronze Medal from the Ecovadis platform a year ago — a significant early recognition of its sustainability commitment and direction.

INITIATIVES
In terms of community initiatives, Meccanoplastica recently signed a one-year sponsorship agreement with the Easy Ride team, a cycling group from Lastra a Signa specializing in mountain bike and enduro, which will soon also compete in road races.

This is a socially impactful initiative that demonstrates strong engagement with the local area where the company operates and where many of its employees live.

The next key steps are: confirming the Ecovadis certification this summer — ideally with an improved rating that would enhance the company’s standing — and obtaining ISO 14001 certification, for which initial steps have already been taken.

“All Meccanoplastica’s initiatives,” the company stated in a recent press release, “are part of a multi-year sustainability plan developed in collaboration with Ambiente Spa and the Environment & Sustainability Division of Amaplast.”
